Royal Mail warn of fraudulent SMS scam

The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic has seen a boom in all online services, such as video conferencing (Skype, Zoom, Discord), online gaming, subscription services, and most importantly of all, online shopping. Some people are either unable to leave their homes or they are too petrified to leave their homes incase they contract the virus, so it’s no surprise that online shopping websites such as eBay, Amazon and Supermarket click and collect services have seen a colossal increase.

Royal Mail SMS Scam demanding ‘small’ fee

The sinister aspect of this scam is that you don’t need to do anything to trigger it, you don’t even need to order online, scammers will send this demand to your phone number out of the blue and it looks like this:

There is a rather threatening message at the end of this text stating that “Actions will be taken if you do not pay this fee”, and this can catch users off-guard.

When a user clicks the link, or they copy the link into their web browser, they’re practically giving their sensitive data away
