The purpose of Web3 Access (formerly known as MetaPress) is to restrict website content from Pages, to Posts and custom post types such as Products, Portfolio pages, Testimonials and even custom post types that you have created yourself specifically for your website and crypto wallet.
In today’s article, we are going to cover the MetaPress plugin developed to use on WordPress.org (not WordPress.com, this will be covered in a future article).
MetaMask – A crypto wallet
MetaMask is the world’s leading crypto wallet that is used by either loading a browser extension or a mobile app and it connects to web3 websites such as OpenSea, Rarible and other crypto websites. If you create a wallet on MetaMask, it will have 2 points of encryption:
Password – This is a standard method of encryption that is used almost daily for logging into social media accounts, work email accounts, bank accounts and employee accounts to check legal documents. It is the most common method of encryption known to date (we will cover this further in a separate article).
Seed Phrase – A seed phrase is a combination of randomised words used to login to an account. A not-so-common but extra secure approach to encryption. In this case, your MetaMask wallet is secured with a 12-word seed phrase and it is unique to your account, and if we take the fact that there are 171,476 words in the English dictionary, there are 6e+62 possible combinations for your seed phrase, to put this into perspective, that’s 6 followed by 62 zeros, in the UK this is regarded as just over 6 decillion possible seed phrases, so unless you flaunt it, you should be safe.
ERC-721, ERC-20 and ERC-1155 Token Verification
ERC-721 (NFTs)
In 2021, NFTs surged in popularity, and this was event on Twitter. Big home brands such as Asics, Clinique, Taco Bell, Mattel’s Hot Wheels, Ray-Ban, Coca-cola and more are taking advantage of NFTs for their marketing strategy. And big projects such as VeeFriends, Bored Ape Yacht Club and HAPE have accrued a substantial amount of revenue.
MetaPress – With MetaPress, you can verify NFT ownership by crypto wallet as a gateway to your website’s exclusive content. All you need are the NFT details such as Token ID and Token Name.
ERC-20 (Tokens)
ERC-20 refers to a scripting standard used on the Ethereum blockchain. And most Ethereum smart contracts are ERC-20 compliant.
MetaPress – When you restrict certain content on your website using MetaPress, you can use it to verify if a user’s crypto wallet holds a certain balance e.g. you can configure your Meta product to have a 2.48 ETH requirement and if the user holds a balance above or equal to this amount they will be granted access to the account.
ERC-1155 (NFTs and SFTs)
The ERC-1155 standard permits the creation of both semi-fungible tokens (SFT) and non-fungible tokens (NFT), with ERC-721 only supporting the creation of NFTs. The main advantage of ERC-1155 in comparison to ERC-721 is that it allows for an infinite amount of tokens whereas ERC-721 needs a new smart contract for each individual type of token.
Web3Access – The process is identical to that of ERC-721, however, ERC-1155 supports an infinite number of tokens e.g. a 100 collection of rare tokens will share a unique code.
Pricing
When acquiring the MetaPress plugin for your website, you will not need to pay a penny, as it is 100% free upfront. When you sell a Meta product (where a user purchases a Meta product using their crypto wallet), MetaPress will collect 1% of the total transaction, so the physical amount taken will depend on the set price,.
Conclusion
If you are starting up an NFT project or creating a crypto shop, Web3 Access is definitely a plausible option for your WordPress website and it enables you to burn the bridge between WordPress and cryptocurrency.
You can easily create an NFT collection on the popular OpenSea platform and then use your tokens as access tokens to exclusive content on your website.
